01 May What Options Do We Offer To Keep You Comfortable?
Our team offers oral surgery, so we can help with wisdom tooth extraction, dental implant placement, and more. We want to ensure that even our patients with dental anxiety feel relaxed and comfortable when they seek treatment. Your Great River Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Clinton, IA, can do so with anesthesia and dental sedation!
Choosing the Right Options for You
Our team wants to make sure we select the right calming medications for you, so you remain calm and relaxed during your visit. For example, we will take your anxiety levels into account. We never minimize your dental phobias, and instead want to help you receive the care you need in a positive and welcoming environment. We also take any special needs into account too. Our team will look at your medical and dental history, any medications you are taking, age, and weight into account when selecting the sedation option for you. We will monitor you throughout the procedure too!
Anesthesia Options
To directly numb the area being treated, we can apply a local anesthesia. You stay conscious but won’t feel discomfort. We may combine this with sedation options like nitrous oxide. For more complicated and extensive treatments, we may opt for general anesthesia, in which you enter a sleep state throughout the procedure.
Dental Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a popular sedation option that is safe for kids and adults alike. The medication allows you to stay conscious and able to respond to the dentist throughout the treatment, but with little to no memory of the procedure afterward. We administer this through a mask over your nose and you inhale the gas. The effects are immediate, but wear off once the procedure ends. Many people can drive themselves home or even return to work or school!
For more involved procedures, such as dental implant placement or tooth extraction, we may recommend IV sedation. We administer this directly to your veins and you enter a deep state of calm, a sleep-like state with no memory of the treatment. The effects take time to wear off, so you should arrange for a friend or family member to bring you home.
