Nitrous Oxide, a Mild Form of Sedation
Nitrous oxide is a gas that is administered through a small nasal mask. Its effects are almost instant and it wears off quickly. Since this is a mild form of sedation, patients are able to drive to and from their appointment. Nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas” gives patients warm, euphoric feelings and its levels can be adjusted for each patient. This type of sedation is best reserved for patients with dental anxieties or for short, minimally invasive procedures.
Oral Sedation
Sedatives in the form of prescription tablets are also commonly used in oral and maxillofacial surgeries. These types of medication help a patient feel relaxed and calm because they work with the GABA receptors in the brain. This type of medication will alleviate the chemical reactions that cause panic and worry. Some patients may fall asleep with this medication and because it is stronger than nitrous oxide, patients should arrange for transportation to our office. Oral sedation may be prescribed for tooth extractions and dental implantation procedures.
IV Sedation
This form of sedation is provided intravenously. IV sedation allows our team to monitor sedation levels and provide only as much medication as necessary throughout treatment. This type of sedation is ideal where stillness is required during a procedure. Intravenous sedation is often used for embedding implants, jaw surgery, and bone grafts. Patients will have little to no recollection of their procedure and will feel completely calm and relaxed.
