06 Nov A Look At Our Anesthesia And Sedation Options
Our team offers oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth extraction and dental implant placement, as well as jaw surgery. We want to ensure that our patients receiving treatment can do so comfortably, even if they have anxiety. In today’s blog, your Platteville, WI, dentist talks about our anesthesia and sedation options, and how we use them to offer a comfortable and relaxing experience for all of our patients.
When You Need a Calming Solution
We will recommend these to ensure your treatment is a comfortable experience, even if you have dental anxiety, an overactive gag reflex, special needs, or other factors that complicate how you receive a dental treatment. Our team will choose an option for you based on the severity of the procedure, as well as your age, weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking.
Dental Anesthesia
We have two different anesthesia options for our patients. With local anesthesia, we will administer the calming medication directly to the area where treatment is occurring. Patients are typically awake during the treatment, and this could also be used with sedation that keeps you conscious, such as nitrous oxide. For more complex treatments, we could offer general anesthesia, which puts you in a sleeplike state with no memory of the procedure.
Sedation Options
With sedation, we have two options to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation. With nitrous oxide, you breathe in a gas through a mask over the nose. You enter a deep state of calm and remain conscious, but have little memory of the procedure. The effects wear off right away, so you can drive yourself home or return to work or school.
IV sedation is used for more complex oral surgical procedures, such as wisdom tooth removal or dental implant placement. Administered through an IV, this offers a much deeper state of calm, and the effects take time to wear off, so be sure someone is available to take you home afterward. This is often perfect for people receiving dental implants. Patients will have little to no memory of the procedure at all.
