01 Aug Don’t Delay Your Wisdom Tooth Extraction
If you or a member of your family is under 25, then now is a great time to schedule a wisdom tooth extraction. Otherwise, these new molars can cause serious trouble for your smile’s health and function. But we can help! Your Great River Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Dubuque, IA, can offer wisdom tooth extraction.
The Risks Posed by Wisdom Teeth
Also known as third molars, these are up to four additional teeth that will erupt in the rear of your mouth, one at the end of each arch. For some, they can erupt without complication. But for the vast majority, there simply isn’t enough room for them. When they arrive, this can cause a painful partial eruption known as an impaction, as well as misalignment, tooth infection, and damaged teeth. If you have undergone orthodontic treatment, this can alter your smile. To avoid these negative changes to the health, function, and beauty of your smile, our team will recommend removing them before they even erupt if possible!
Planning Your Tooth Extraction
When you or a family member approaches their late teens and early 20s, we want to conduct an exam to see if you have wisdom teeth soon to erupt. If so, then our team will plan an extraction. With digital x-rays, we can take detailed images of the smile to pinpoint the position of the tooth and plan a removal that doesn’t impact sinus cavities, nerve tissues, or blood vessels. Once we plan the procedure in detail and the time comes for the extraction, we will administer a local anesthetic to the area being treated, along with dental sedation, so you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure at all.
Taking Out Wisdom Teeth
Once you are properly relaxed, our team will then open the gums above the teeth to access and remove them. Our team then gently takes out the teeth with a pair of forceps. Our team will suture the site closed, and a friend or family member can take you home. We will provide instructions to ensure a fast healing time, along with prescriptions to aid in the healing process and keep you comfortable. We then remove sutures in a follow-up visit. For some, a return to their normal routine is possible in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
