What is the difference between oral and IV sedation?
Oral sedation is used for less invasive or complex procedures. In some cases, oral sedation may be used for patients with mild and moderate dental phobias or medical anxieties. This type of sedation does not put a patient in an unconscious state but it can make people feel groggy or sleepy. Oral sedation medication normally comes from the benzodiazepine class of drugs such as Ativan or Valium.
IV sedation, on the other hand, is generally much stronger and can be used to put a patient in a sleep-like state. This type of sedation will affect one’s ability to recall treatment, too, which can be ideal if oral surgery is lengthy or complex. Children tend to benefit from IV sedation since they have difficulty being still for long amounts of time.
What are the benefits of IV sedation?
There are many benefits to IV sedation. Patients will feel no discomfort or panic during treatment. Instead, they will feel total relaxation. IV sedation is highly controllable because the medication is delivered intravenously, this means the dosage can be adjusted for a person’s unique needs. Lastly, since IV sedation is strong, our guests will rest comfortably as we perform necessary treatment.
