Do Dental Implants Require Special Care?

implant dentistry DubuqueRising in popularity, implant dentistry is becoming the go-to method for replacing lost teeth. Patients looking for life-like and durable tooth replacements enjoy the security and durability that dental implants have to offer.  Placed by your oral surgeon, dental implants involve replacing both the visible portion of a tooth and its roots. Promoting optimal oral function, patients can eat virtually any type of food and smile without feeling self-conscious.

Constructed from biocompatible materials that mimic the function and appearance of natural teeth, dental implants last for decades with proper care. Their durability is attributed to a biological process called osseointegration where the bone fuses to the implant’s titanium rod, firmly locking it in place. Treated just like natural teeth, patients brush implants and floss them as part of their normal oral hygiene routine. Implants are cleaned with a regular toothbrush and store-bought toothpaste as well. Unlike dentures, implants are permanently embedded into the jawbone and are not removed for overnight soaking in cleaning solutions.

Although implants will eventually be treated like natural teeth, this procedure does require special care after surgery. After your implants have been placed in your jawbone, you will receive a packet of post-operative instructions for caring for teeth and gums after surgery.

Once implants are placed in the jaw, you will undergo a healing period, which may last a few months. During this time, your oral surgeon will follow up with your progress to ensure that your dental implant is stable. After your jawbone has fused to your implant, you will visit your general dentist for the placement of a prosthetic crown. The crown is then attached to the implant and will serve as the visible portion of your lost tooth so that you can chew and bite food comfortably.
