How do dental implants compare to bridges or dentures?
Like bridges and dentures, dental implants will replace the visible portion (crowns) of teeth. The difference between implants and these prosthetics is the fact the implants also replace lost tooth structure beneath the gums. Using a titanium post, which is surgically implanted in the jaw, the implant will function like a tooth’s root. This means that the implant is permanent and stable. Unlike dentures, an implant is not removed for cleanings and will not slide in the mouth during meals.
Why is titanium ideal for an implant?
Titanium has proven to be a biocompatible metal for implants that replace hard, mineralized tissue. For example, titanium rods and posts have been used to replace bone mass in the spine and the hip. The jawbone, like other parts of the body, will treat titanium as mineralized tissue. Through a process called osseointegration—where the bone fuses to an implant—the jawbone will anchor the dental implant in place permanently.
Will my new teeth look natural?
Yes, dental implants with porcelain or porcelain fused to metal crowns look incredibly natural. Porcelain closely resembles a tooth in both its shade of white and its translucency. Patients with porcelain crowns attached to their implants enjoy a full restoration of oral function along with a natural looking smile.
